How to Get to the South Fork American River

From Sacramento on U.S. Hwy 50:

Follow Hwy 50 east toward Placerville and South Lake Tahoe. Take the Ponderosa Exit (#37), and turn left on Ponderosa/S. Shingle Rd to cross the freeway. At the second stoplight, turn right onto N. Shingle Rd toward Coloma/Lotus.

Follow N. Shingle Rd approximately 4.5 miles, where it turns into Lotus Rd; continue an additional 6 miles. As you approach Lotus, pass through the town’s first stop sign and continue to the 3-way stop sign. Turn right to pass through the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park and into the city of Coloma.

 

From Reno/North Lake Tahoe:

Take Interstate 80 west toward Auburn. Take Hwy 49 south from Auburn approximately 17 miles. You will arrive in the city of Coloma after approximately 30 minutes; if you enter into the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park, you’ve gone too far.

 

From South Lake Tahoe:

Take Hwy 50 west toward Placerville. Turn right onto Highway 49 (north), where you’ll run into the town of Placerville. Take Hwy 49 an additional 8.5 miles into the town of Coloma. If you enter into the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park, you’ve gone too far.

 

From Placerville:

Take Hwy 49 north approximately 8.5 miles until you reach the town of Coloma. If you enter into the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park, you’ve gone too far.
